Mark Powell is a Partner in FRB’s Private Client Group. For nearly 30 years, he has helped affluent families craft thoughtful estate plans. His practice thrives because he takes the time to help his clients (and their families, if appropriate) identify their motivating values, giving their plans the best chance at working smoothly for years to come. Today, his practice is focused on two areas: protecting his clients’ assets from future lawsuits and claims and implementing his clients’ charitable goals.

Mr. Powell is certified as a specialist in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law by the California State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization. Only 1% of active California lawyers hold this specialization. He holds an AV (Preeminent) rating from Martindale Hubbell, the highest possible rating. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), which inducts peer-elected practitioners who are at the top of their profession, committed to maintaining excellence in the trust and estate legal field, and to continually improving the practice of trust and estate law.

Mr. Powell served for many years as an adjunct professor of law at Chapman University Fowler School of Law. He regularly speaks at continuing education events for attorneys and accountants, and he has published articles in a variety of media, including the top trust and estate journals. Over the years, he has served on a variety of nonprofit boards; most recently, he was a director for the Orangewood Foundation and the JF Shea Center for Therapeutic Riding Center.

Today, he serves as the program vice-chair for the California Lawyers Association’s Nonprofit Organization’s Committee, and he works with the Board of Legal Specialization in developing and grading exams for attorneys hoping to become certified specialists in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law.

Mr. Powell works hard to meet clients where they are and help them understand their options. He takes pride in his ability to boil complex legal issues down into understandable issues so his clients can make decisions using their own judgment.
